| The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Grotto is in the countryside and it was built, after a miracle happened in 1568, between 1570 and 1591.
On its foundation has been handed down a legend: a blind man took refuge in a cave to shelter from a storm and miraculously appeared out an image of the Virgin, who urged him to erect a church in that place, promising protection to the inhabitants of Carpignano. The cave, which was originally an ancient Byzantine crypt, now is the lower part of the Sanctuary. Inside there is the image of the Madonna uncovered during the miracle. |
