Hellbrunn is an early baroque castle with trick fountains in the southern part of Salzburg city. The prince-archbishop Markus Sittikus had the castle, gardens and fountains built from 1613-1619. The complex is regarded as a unique example of an Italianate-style "villa suburbana" north of the Alps. There is a zoo adjoining the park. Markus Sittikus von Hohenems was elected as prince-archbishop in 1612. From 1613 he started to built a "Villa Suburbana" according to Italian models infront of the gates of Salzburg. The zoo already existed since 1424. Architect was the Italian Santiro Solari which was also made the plans for the cathedral in Salzburg. In 1617 the first opera-performance of "Orfeo" from Claudio Monteverdi in central Europe was held here.
