In Galtür, at the end of the Paznaun valley, exists a uniquely fascinating world. Nature presents itself here in all its simple beauty in an overpoweringly impressive way. Galtür is a village on the edge of nature. The exposure of the municipality at an elevation of 1,600 demands a high degree of creativity and optimism from the people. The residents developed survival strategies over centuries. The powerful protective wall and the Galtür Alpinarium bear witness to this. The Galtür Alpinarium is a central element of a 345-m long and 19-m high protective wall that was erected following the avalanche in February 1999. The combination of protective wall and exhibition room makes the Galtür Alpinarium and its architecture unique. The delights and rigours of life in the mountains The permanent exhibition entitled “The wall – Life in the mountains” is concerned with the efforts of people to adapt to changed conditions and to learn from nature. Climate change is also looked at. The newly designed room on the topic of “Linking and networking” deals with roads and transport connections in the mountains. Enjoyment is also provided for: The Galtür Alpinarium offers an indoor and outdoor climbing wall, the “Gefrorene Wasser” café with a panoramic sun terrace, internet lounge, seminar and event rooms, as well as an accessible roof platform with a wonderful view of the mountains surrounding Galtür. Those who don't suffer from vertigo can get a direct view of the wall from the open-air protruding rooftop path.
