The Castle of Ortona is one of the most significant examples of the transition from medieval military architecture to that of the Renaissance. With the defeat of James Caldora, Alfonso of Aragon, in 1442, took the decision to build a massive defensive structure with trapezoidal shaped promontory known today with the significant name of "the Pizzuta". The entire system is typically square in shape and has curtain walls of different dimension In 1946, due to a landslide, the castle lost much of the walls of the north-west worsening the already precarious conditions of the entire structure.
