| The appointment of Joseph Haydn as the prince's Hofkapellmeister (court orchestra director, composing and performing music) began the great artistic period in the city's history.
Haydn, an Austrian, was employed with the Esterházy family as a court musician for more than 40 years. After his death he was first buried in Vienna, but later his remains were transferred to this church in Eisenstadt.
The house where Haydn lived from 1766 to 1790 is now a museum. So is his Summer Hut and Herb Gardens just outside the old city walls (guided tours). |
