| According to the plans of Vienna architects Helmer und Fellner, there used to be a bank on the corner of the Pollheimerstraße/Maria-Theresia-Straße from 1901-1904 which, from 1904 to 2002, housed the collections of the city museum established in 1892. The archaeological collection of the city museum was moved in Summer to the former Minoriten monastery and where it was re-organised and officially opened on 17th October 2002. For this reason, the city museum at Pollheimerstraße 17 is closed from 8th July.
Since 2002 a 'Kaiserpanorama' stereoscopic viewer has been on display for the public to use. The building is also home to the city of Wels gallery, the MediaSpace organisation - a centre for media education - the Wels "Buch.Zeit" company for young people's literature and the youth media project, "Youki". Together these institutions form the MedienKulturHaus Wels (Wels media culture).
The building's artistically designed facade is decorated with metal plates and copper bee hives as well as sculptures in Mannesdorf stone, artificial marble, artificial stone, cement and plaster. Inside, magnificent plaster work can be seen. |
