| The area to the south of the city square between the Traungasse and territorial castle was not, as is often assumed, the centre point for the development of the town in the Middle Ages. In fact this area was known as "Unterstetten" oder "Hinterstetten" in the 15th and 16th centuries and gradually developed out from the city square and the Traungasse. The wooden sheds gradually gave way to walled houses. Today the houses at the heart of the area date from the Late Middle Ages, with their small shaft-like air wells and usually decorated facades. The area first became known as the old town in the 19th century. |
