Burg Wels
Secular building
no
Burg Wels was built way back in 776 BC to protect the city against Awaren. It is the landmark of the city of Wels and unlucky enough the original entrance and ditch are long gone. Still entering the site does give you the awareness of its historical importance. For example, the archway of the entrance to the courtyard has some beautiful statues situated there. The garden of the Castle consist of the bailey and the garden with a small elevated patio, located on the eastern enclosure wall. The garden is of special architectural and historic interest, because it is squar-shaped and faces the magnificently designed back sides of historic town houses in the East and North. There is a lapidarium (huge stone with Roman inscriptions) right in the middle of it. The Burg is in the southeastern corner of the old town, where the Emperor Maximilian I died on January 12, 1519. It is now used mainly as a cultural center (festival hall and art gallery); in summer concerts and theatrical performances are held in the courtyard.
