There were originally two city fountains in the city square (the upper and lower city fountains) which were built in the 16th century. The upper fountain contained a statue designed by Linz sculptor Hans Püchler of a knight with a flag and shield bearing the city coat of arms. The fountain which stands opposite the town hall today is a copy of the Renaissance fountain from the 16th century which was removed in 1896.
