Stadtplatz (City square)
Secular monument, statue
no
The current image of the city square was established over the course of the centuries. In the 12th century, there was a cemetery to the east of the square on the site of the current city parish church stretching further to the west. The development of the square into its current form probably began in the 13th century. Today the square with its architectonic closeness is one of the most beautiful squares in Austria. Its houses mostly have charming Baroque facades dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The houses themselves are mostly older, which is particularly evident from the back yards which date from the Gothic and Renaissance period. Since the Middle Ages, markets have been held in the city square where cattle and agricultural produce in particular are traded. Even today weekly, Advent and antiques markets are held here. And every August knights, craftsmen and jugglers gather to give the public a taste of the past at the Mediaeval market.
