The water tower was constructed by master bricklayer Wolfgang Khranlachner in 1577 and was commissioned by the city chamber of commerce. Within the tower was a pump station and water container from which water from the Mühlbach was channelled to the individual town houses and the two fountains in the city square. Legend has it that the water wheels were driven by prisoners. Particularly striking are the beautiful Renaissance architecture and coats of arms on the facade of the tower. The coats of arms symbolise the various different of residents of the house of Habsburg.
