Legend about the foundation of the church: One day a strange looking galley, with an emblem of golden dove, appeared in front of Budva. Some longhaired and long bearded men went out of the galley. They came from Spain, from the holy place of ''Madonna Nera''. They had with them an icon of Mother of God, which they placed on the cape with two lit candles. In that way, they wanted to check if there were any Christians in the town, because they knew that Christians would accept the icon.On the cape where they had placed the icon, the church of Santa Maria in Punta was built in 840 AD.
