| The 13th century church of S. Maria delle Grotte sits at the northern- most end of the village of Fossa. The exterio is simple but the church houses two of the oldest medieval fresco cycles in Abruzzo. The frescoes on the right and the back are 13th century Benedectine, those on the left are 14th-15th century Tuscan. Among the oldest, the Epiphany, the Creation of Heaven, Earth and the Waters. The left wall features an Assumption by S. di Cola da Casentino (1486). |
