| The basilica is the most attractive and imposing church in the city. The construction commenced in 1287. The site is closely connected to that of Celestino V through the plenary indulgence conferred because of his incoronation here (1294) . The solemn event is still celebrated on 28-29 august with the rite of the pardon (Perdonanza). The rectangular façade is a fine example of the traditional white and pink marble checkerboard design featuring square, cross-shaped and diamond patterns. The façade was built in the early 15th century and is divided into two sections. The top section is distinguished by pilaster strips framing a large gothic rose window (14th c.). The Holy Door (Porta Santa), on the left-hand side, opens for the city Jubilee. The church has a nave and two aisles separated by lancet arches set on octagonal pillars and delimited by three arched towards the transept, the latter is also divided into three bays, with a deep polygonal choir and two side chapels. The chapel on the right apse houses the sepulchre of St. Peter Celestine. |
