| The church of Santa Maria in Cerulis, dedicated to the Annunziata, dating from the eleventh century., Born on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Hercules "Iovius", now preserved as an inscription testifies to the archaeological museum of Naples. The first mention of the church dates back to 1021. Then, with the construction of the castle, the building lost its importance and place of worship became marginal. Currently is celebrated Mass only on August the 15th.
The structure, with its unusual trapezoidal plan, has three naves, divided by heavy pillars, ending in apses (today there are only two). Frescoes of the late fourteenth century. The present entrance is on the side with a stone portal in 1863. |
