The castle of Palena is on the highest point of the stands and in the context of the country for its size. The origins of the castle are probably to be traced to the Middle Ages since Palena, since the year one thousand, is remembered as a fief of Matthew Bedroom. Following the structure passed into the hands of the most important feudal families of the area. The structure over the centuries has gradually lost many distinguishing features, such as the embattled cornice, reinforcing the towers, the keep and finally the observation deck, destroyed by the earthquake of 1933. Also suffered extensive damage after the Second World War after which it was rebuilt in 1950. Today the palace is characterized by an irregular rectangular shape, which turns out to be the result of secular changes and additions. The ducal castle is now home to the High Museum Geopaleontologic Aventine and can be reached on foot directly from the center of the country
