Description:
The building of the new church began in 1459, after the demolition of the old temple, dedicated to Holy Cross. The architectural structure is due to the architect – sculptor Gabriele Riccardi between 1524 and 1570. The dome was completed in 1590; in 1606 the execution of 3 portals was commissioned to Francesco Antonio Zimbalo. The fastigium is attributed to Giuseppe Zimbalo, nephew of Francesco Antonio. The Basilica is considered the most famous example of “Baroque leccese”. The superimposing and the following of figures and symbols are so amazing that the front must be deciphered slowly.
