It was built in the Romanesque period, at the side of the Tower Norman - Swabian. Its construction was begun, probably around 1200, as evidenced by the capitals of Corinthian style, different from each other and adorned with acanthus leaves and palmettes, the Romanesque decoration on taxes arc of the pillars of the transept show friezes and busts with ornamental plants and the number of human trefoil arches that you see on the top outside of the right side of the church. The construction work had to be interrupted and delays due to fire and destruction caused by the invasions of the Hungarians and the Bretons, and so justify the gothic elements, ribs visible in the cruise of the presbytery and the absence of works of art prior to 1500 . Further damage the church endured in the earthquake of 1456, that was almost entirely rebuilt between 1495 and 1505, during the Venetian rule, stood as the plaque now destroyed, along with the rosette and the lions supporting the columns of the porch, when, in 1848, was torn down the old facade of the church, tottering, following the demolition of the Great Gate, linking the matrix to the Norman-Swabian Tower.
