The Sant’Angelo grotto, a place of rock worship, is hidden in the forested scope of Mount Morrone, dominating the windy gorge of Popoli. This is one of the most interesting grottoes in Abruzzo, it was a place of worship as early as Roman times, then in the Middle Ages, when it was dedicated to the Gargano cult, already very common in the Longobard era, and sheperds played a part in its diffusion throughout Abruzzo. Its strategic position compared to the Tremonti gorge is evident and in particular to the mountain pass of Mont Soti, where a branch of the Centurelle- Montesecco sheep track, from the Tirino valley, crosses the foothills of the Gran Sasso chain.
