| the abandoned ruins of the Temple of San Miserino is considered the early Christian place of worship among the oldest in the entire region (VI-VIII centuries). it is a building of great architectural interest for its plan with central octagonal dome cover, which recalls the Roman building tradition. For centuries, abandoned and nearly destroyed, was restored only in small part, it still shows the typical dome cover (opus cementicium) which sits on pillars and capitals with acanthus leaves. The interior is about 2 meters below ground level with four small opposing apses; traces of plaster on the walls are red, but have totally disappeared Byzantine frescoes and stucco, as well as the floor. Accessed by a pronaos flanked by two small areas largely demolished. Probably originated as a pagan temple (or nymph), was later used by early Christians as a baptistery. |
