The Church of San Pietro della Jenca has medieval origins and is constituted at present by a wall structure of small size with a regular monoaula planimetric configuration. The notoriety of this monument is linked to the figure of John Paul II, as to be commonly known as "church of the Pope." The pope loved it go to meditation and prayer in this place, a true "nature sanctuary". In 1999 the church was located outside the stele in memory of papal visits, and in 2005, May 18, the birthday of the Holy Father, he has been called a peak, Cima Giovanni Paolo II, including Pizzo Cefalone and Vetta of Malecoste. At the event was stuck on top of an iron cross, the only allowed on the Gran Sasso.
