| The Cathedral is the most valuable monument of Teramo and is located in the heart of the historic center. The cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and San Berardo, patron of the city.
Following the destruction of the early Christian church of Sancta Maria Aprutiensis in 1155-11565, by Count Robert of Loretello, Bishop Guido II decided to rebuild the cathedral at about a hundred steps away from the previous close to the area 'Roman amphitheater. Work began in 1158 and was completed in 1176. In later centuries the cathedral has undergone various transformations of Teramo
The tower, 48 meters high, was built at various times from the twelfth century onwards and the last trip back to 1493, by Antonio da Lodi. Until the sixties the bell was attached to the palace of the Bishop to be a way reserved to the curia.
Inside the cathedral you identify two styles: the Romanesque, in the beginning, and Gothic, the first half of the fourteenth century, at the back. |
