About a kilometer from the city center is the entrance of the spectacular gorge of S. Spirit (or throat of St. Martin), which tradition says was opened by St. Martin in person to allow locals to reach the waters and the high mountain pastures. After a few hundred meters of the initial narrow gorge opens into a wider and brighter canyon, where are the ruins of the Benedictine monastery of San Martino in Valle (1044). Within the Valley of the Wild S. Spirit is a path that winds at 14 km., Over a drop of about 2,400 m., Leads up to Monte Amaro (2795 m., The second peak of the Apennines). Near the entrance of the gorge to visit are the picturesque headwaters of the Verde River, whose waters have excellent reading and bacteriologically well as trace elements.
