Alternative name:
Category:

Religion:
Catholic
World heritage:
no
Description:
The church was built in 14th century on a Benedictine monastery by the Dominican community. Its gothic facade was lately completed by a late baroque staircase that links the entrance to the road. The overall effect is very scenographic and picturesque.
Events:
The church is famous for one of the most fascinating Rite of Holy Week in Italy. At midnight of Holy Thursday, the Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows begins, having been organised by the Confraternity of Maria SS. Addolorata. To the notes of the troccola (a wooden instrument that sets the pace of the procession) and by the moving funeral marches, the statue of the 'Addolorata' is paraded all night long in a symbolic quest for her Son, together with twelve pairs of brothers bearing a crown of thorns, in memory of Jesus's crown of thorns.
