Chiesa di S. Gennaro
Church, ruined church, chapel, temple
Catholic
no
The church of S. Gennaro is located outside the city walls, outside the second city wall in the area called “Catecombe”, where perhaps there are caves used by early Christians. It was completed in 1820 and consecrated the following year. It is named after its founder, monsignor Gennaro Antonucci, who in 1785 raised it to the parish. It has a Latin cross. Inside there are wooden statues of the Assumption of Good Counsel and St. Luigi Gonzaga, all made by Neapolitan Giuseppe Verzella (nineteenth century), the statues of Saints Cosma and Damian, by an unknown author, and a reproduction of the icon of Our Lady of Martyrs, signed “Michelangelus fecit 1815”. Today it is home to the parish.
