The museum was set up in 1971 in the premises of the ground floor and basement of the Palazzo d’Avalos (XVI century). It was inaugurated in 1981 and is divided into five sectors. At street level there are the remains of modern times, while those in the basement of the modern era, medieval, Roman and pre-Roman. Among the most important works of the collection: the sarcophagus of St. Secundus (second half of the seventh century), coming from Constantinople, and found in Troia near the former Church of St. Mark the Evangelist; the tombstone of Rubria Marcella (II-III century AD. C).
