| Rudolph Archibald Reiss (Lausanne 1876 – Belgrade 1929), renowned expert in criminal law and professor at Lausanne University, was sent by the International Court upon a request filed by the Serbian Government, as a member of the Commission on War Crimes of Austrian and Bulgarian occupying forces in Serbian during WW I. He gathered numerous documents on the crimes by the invaders in Mačva and Eastern Serbia and made the world public aware of the ferocities against the Serbs. Defending the interests of the Serbs, Reiss joined the Serbian army in WW I and crossed Albania with it. After the war he lived in Belgrade, where he died in 1929 and was buried, according to his own wish, in the cemetery at Topčider. In August 1931, as a token of gratitude to fellow warrior and friend, the Association of Reserve Officers and Veterans erected a monument to Reiss. The sculpture for the memorial, a bust of Archibald Reiss, was done by Marko Brežanin, a renowned portrait artist; this is his only public monument. |
