| The calvary in Šmarje pri Jelšah with the remarkable pilgrimage Church of Sv. Rok is one of our foremost monuments of Baroque art. More than any other it touches the human feelings and experience of the way of calvary.
The church is decorated with exceptionally rich Baroque ornamentation, and in the chapels, the suffering of Christ is presented with surprising life-size statues and frescoes.
The fourteen chapels of the Way of the Cross, equipped with rich baroque decorations, are located by the zig-zag path towards the pilgrimage church of St. Rok. The way the pilgrim, traveller or tourist is lead between the chapels, one can only see one's next destination, everything else is arranged to form a sort of a scenery like in a real theatre. |
