Klis fortress

Klis fortress was built above a mountain pass and it took many years to complete. The fortress contains archaeological evidence dating from prehistoric times to the seventeenth century. The fortress was one of many used to defend against the Turks. There are a number of records that document Klis ranging from Procoplus (a Greek historian) to Toma (a Split historian and deacon). In the thirteenth century Klis was ruled by Croatian feudalists and was an administrative seat. Most of the remains date from the seventeenth century.
