| The cathedral was built around 1080, on the site of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mother of God, built several centuries before by the Bishop Sabino (sixth century). It was restored and modified largely after the earthquake of 1689 and the early decades of the nineteenth century. Inside there are elements from the Roman city buildings: monolithic marble columns, Corinthian capitals and Corinthian-Asian-Western marbles. For the extension works of the nineteenth century was the new neo-classical facade. In the crypt under the chancel there are the relics of St. Sabino. Also inside there are two Romanesque sculptures of the eleventh century: the pulpit Acceptus (1050 approx.) and the episcopal throne of Romualdus, commissioned by Bishop Ursone (1078-1089). |
