The construction of the Cathedral of Trani dates back to 1099, the year of the canonization of St. Nicholas the Pilgrim, whose remains are preserved inside. It was completed in 1143. It rises in two levels. The upper church has a Latin cross divided into three aisles by twin columns, the nave is lined with the art galleries through fourteen trefoils. The nave and transept are covered with exposed trusses, while the two side aisles have vaults. Priests in the area are the remains of the mosaic floor imagery of the twelfth century, built by the priest Pantaleone. At the lower level there is the crypt of St. Nicholas the Pilgrim, completed in 1142. It consists of 42 cruises supported by 28 columns greek marble, surmounted by capitals made of the same stone. Next there is the crypt of Santa Maria, which occupies the entire top and transept of the church is in the existing perimeter of the old Byzantine church. In the church of Santa Maria is the tomb of Passasepe Lambertini, built in the early fourteenth century. On the left aisle there are other remains of frescoes, painted between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, including a Madonna and Child with an S. Theodore on horseback. From the Crypt or Church of Santa Maria, you enter the Hypogeum of San Leucio, square-shaped, pre-Romanesque building. On the facade of the cathedral there is a single lancet window at the top, the great rose window imagery and three round-headed windows in the larger central and decorated with two lions and elephants with two columns. At the lower level there are a series of eight blind arches against the wall and the beautiful carved Romanesque doorway. The portal is closed by a beautiful bronze door with two leaves, made by Barisano from Trani and dated 1175. Next to the Cathedral there is the 59-meter-high bell tower, begun in 1200 and finished well after a century. The cathedral is the seat of the Confraternity of San Nicola Pellegrino.
