In 1223 Frederick II of Swabia wanted a park to be built in order to hunt birds, in particular hawks. In the park there was built also a castle which was the Emperor's residence .It is in Apulian Romanesque style. Its walls rose in an isolated locality, but dominated the inhabited centre. It is supposed that in night on 5th December 1456 it was damaged by an earthquake. The almost complete destruction occurred after a terrible downpour in 1687.
