| Gravina in Puglia is located at the boundary between the provinces of Bari and Matera. It extends along the torrent "Gravina" which runs across a charming valley dotted with rupestral dwellings and churches and flows into the river Bradano. This landscape recalls the most well known "Sassi di Matera".
In the area along the torrent, corresponding to the low town, a lot of graves have been unearthed. They have a different tipology and date back from the seventh to the third century B.C. The graves differ for the presence of Attic or colonian potteries and vases with red figures.
The powerful town walls include the Botromagno hill, which is considered the acropolis of the old centre. In this area there are the rappresentative buildings, mixed with some late Hellenistic and Roman villas. In these buildings, ruins of mosaic flooring and painted plaster have been found. |
