The archaeological site of Narona is a former Roman trading post and it was well fortified. Narona was granted the status of a Roman colony during the rule of Emperor Augustus and dwindled during the seventh century because of the arrival of the Slavonic tribes. The town also served as a military base because of its location close to the river Neretva and later on was a judicial seat for the administrative region. It is said to have suffered badly during an earthquake during the fourth century.
