| Porto Badisco, on the road that leads from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca, is one of the seaside resorts on the Adriatic coast. It is rich in Limestone stacks or formations (similar to the twelve apostles in Australia) and is one of the few examples of cliffs still standing in the Italian peninsular. The coast, interspersed with small inlets and gorges has some spectacularly beautiful geological features, like the Marmitta dei Giganta, flora rich in medicinal plants and rare endemic species, wild nesting birds, on a migratory path which thrills visitors. The Limestone cavities, a distinctive feature of the subsoil, are the most important feature. Here lies the Grotta dei Cervi (Deer Cave), famous for pictorial cycles from Neolithic times. In the this area the Market Farms “Grotta dei Cervi” and “Torre di Santo Emiliano” provide visitors with a good and well equipped starting point for walks or horse rides around this wonderful natural and historic area. |
