| The Revolving Bridge (or Bridge of San Francesco di Paola) of Taranto is the structure that connects the island of the Old Town to the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. It was inaugurated in May 22, 1887 by Admiral Ferdinand Acton. The bridge overlooks a canal 400 meters long and 73 meters. It is 89.9 meters long and 9.3 meters wide.
The structure was subsequently remodeled in the years 1957-1958, by introducing an operation of the electric type. The new bridge was inaugurated by President Giovanni Gronchi March 10, 1958, and was named after St. Francis of Paola, the patron of the people of the sea. |
